The Destination is Usually the End

Exactly one year ago, I booked my ticket to Madrid for a trip that would change my life. Many moons ago, a good friend told me that when it comes to breakfast, the chicken was involved but the pig was committed. Well, the flight reservation made me an oinker. I spent the following three weeks devouring travel guides, emptying my wallet at REI, and tromping around the hills of Ketchum to break in my new hiking shoes. The excitement of learning something new each day really kept me focused on the moment. Never once did I even imagine taking the final steps up the stairs to the cathedral in Santiago. It was all about the journey.

I am launching my book, A Million Steps, on September 14, 2013 at the Boise Center on the Grove. This date happens to be the one year anniversary of my first step on the Camino. Lydia Smith is bringing her exceptional film, “Walking the Camino: Six Ways to Santiago” to Boise for two benefit screenings. I hope this is the first of many events with Lydia. Once again, I find myself immersed in the unknown. This time is happens to be the arena of event promotion. I have savaged local media with press releases, posted hundreds of flyers in downtown Boise, and cornered friends for help.

Last week, I loaded up my shoulder briefcase bag with flyers, press releases, business cards, push pins, and three rolls of tape. I downed an extra potent latte and then drove to Downtown Boise. I have lived here for 49 years, but never viewed if from the perspective of a “flyer hanger”. I met a ton of great people, discovered many new businesses, and gained an appreciation for the art of distributing promotional information. Never once did I imagine sitting on Oprah’s couch.

One of my favorites was a stop at Riebe’s Shoe Repair. I have been a loyal patron for over 30 years. I walked in and Bob said, “I don’t see any shoes in your hand, what do you want?”
“I need some help to promote my book launch,” I replied in a begging manner.
With a Cheshire cat grin, Bob blurted “We don’t put that crap in our windows but for you………take the front door!”

I had a similar encounter with my friend Mick Hanks at To The Nynes. These are the savored moments that add a bounce to my step. The road of life is filled with unexpected twists and turns. Yet our lessons and growth are always derived from the journey, not the destination.
